Mona - A Story (Chapter 16)

And she also said, “Whether I work or not, I definitely need you. But I also have to work; if I do, I’ll pay you.” I replied, “Alright, Didi, go ahead.” Then she said, “First, let’s see if I get it.” I told her, “Didi, it’ll definitely work out,” and a few days later, it actually did. Then Didi called me and said, “I got the job, but I have to go to the office every day. If you say so, I’ll join; if not, I won’t. Don’t betray me.” She started crying at that point. I’m also quite emotional, so I said, “Didi, go for it. I’ll handle everything; you go to the office without worrying.”

So Didi began going to the office every day. I never took time off in the meantime. If I ever did, it would only be on Saturdays; otherwise, never—no matter who might come to see me. Taking days off in between was simply not an option. In this way, time passed, and now the baby is four years old. There were a few minor issues that led to arguments now and then, but in two or three days, things would calm down, and I’d stay on.

This time, something happened in my in-laws’ home—my uncle-in-law had an accident and passed away. I got the call, so I told Didi, “This happened. Please give me two days off, and I’ll leave on Saturday; I’ll be back in ten days.” But she yelled at me as if I’d done something terrible, said all sorts of things. Then I said, “I’m going anyway, whether the job remains or not.” She responded, “Fine, go now, just go,” which hurt me a lot, and I left.

When I was leaving, I had some belongings there; she gave them to me, saying, “Take these, too.” What else could I do? I took them and left. I stayed at home for ten days and then came back. After returning, I started searching for a job but haven’t found one yet. Now I only have three cooking jobs. The rest of the time, I just stay in my room. Even so, I’m stressed, not sure what to do—I feel stuck. In the end, I left it all to God, hoping for whatever He wills.
