Mass Layoffs at TCS: Why an IT Union is Fighting for 12,000 Jobs
Big news from the tech world has many employees worried. TCS, one of India's largest IT companies, recently announced plans to cut around 12,000 jobs – that's about 2% of their entire workforce. This isn't just a small trim; it's reportedly the biggest layoff in the history of Indian IT, making it a truly unsettling time for thousands of families.
But not everyone is taking this lying down. The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), an IT employee union, has stepped in. They've written a strong letter to the Union Labour Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, basically saying, "Hold on a minute! These job cuts are unfair and possibly even illegal."
NITES is demanding that TCS immediately stop all terminations and bring back the affected employees. They argue that if a company as massive as TCS can let go of so many people without following proper procedures or being held accountable, it sets a dangerous precedent. This could lead to widespread job uncertainty, fewer protections for workers, and a general loss of confidence in India's job market.
One of their biggest concerns? The timing and the optics. While thousands face job uncertainty, TCS's annual report showed that their CEO, K Krithivasan, received a significant pay raise, earning over 300 times what the typical employee makes. NITES believes this highlights a serious lack of accountability from the company's leadership.
The union also pointed out another issue: TCS's delayed onboarding practices, where hundreds of new hires have been left waiting to join the company.
This isn't just NITES speaking up. Other IT employee unions are also voicing their concerns, calling the dismissals unlawful. They're advising affected TCS staff not to resign under pressure. Instead, they're encouraging employees to demand proper notice period pay, severance packages, and even extended health insurance benefits for up to a year.
The situation at TCS is a stark reminder of the challenges facing employees in the fast-paced tech world. It highlights the crucial role of unions in protecting workers' rights. As this story unfolds, many will be watching closely to see if the Labour Ministry steps in and what this means for job security in India's booming IT industry.
