The 99-Spot Mystery: Is Gurgaon Really Cleaner?

Gurgaon's Cleanliness Ranking: A Giant Leap or a Big Question Mark?

Ever wonder how clean our cities really are? Every year, the Indian government releases its "Swachh Survekshan" report, which is basically a big report card on how well cities are managing their waste and sanitation. And this year, Gurgaon just made headlines with a truly surprising jump!

According to the latest results for 2024-25, Gurgaon has been ranked the 41st cleanest city nationally and the 7th cleanest in Haryana. Sounds good, right? What's truly astonishing is that this is a massive leap from its 140th spot last year!

City officials, including Gurgaon Mayor Rajrani Malhotra and Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, are understandably celebrating. They credit this impressive climb to teamwork, improved waste processing, and better door-to-door waste collection. The survey looks at things like how much waste is collected from homes, how much is sorted by residents, and how much is actually treated and recycled.

Gurgaon scored high on a couple of these points: nearly all (98%) of its waste is now being processed, and more than half (59%) of homes get their trash picked up right at their doorstep. Plus, the city has achieved a "Water+" certification, meaning it's doing well with treating wastewater and sewage.

But here's where things get interesting... many residents are scratching their heads, wondering if these numbers truly reflect what they see on the ground. Residents Welfare Association (RWA) members like Kusum Sharma and Chaitali Mandhotra have openly expressed shock, calling the jump a "lie." They point to visible garbage, construction debris, and open dumping still common across the city.

Their biggest concern? Waste segregation at home. Despite the overall jump, Gurgaon only managed a dismal 10% rate for sorting waste at the source (separating dry, wet, and hazardous waste). This means most people aren't sorting their trash before it's collected, making proper recycling and processing much harder. The city also hasn't achieved a "Garbage-Free City" star rating, which looks at comprehensive waste management.

This skepticism comes at a time when many RWAs in Gurgaon are actually pushing to take over sanitation duties themselves, arguing that the current municipal policies aren't effectively tackling the garbage problem.

So, what's the real story? Is Gurgaon truly getting cleaner, or are these rankings missing a crucial part of the picture? While the official numbers show significant progress in waste processing, the visible garbage and low segregation rates highlight that there's still a long way to go. For Gurgaon to truly become a top clean city, it seems the focus needs to shift from just processing waste to ensuring every resident plays their part in sorting it from the start.
