In English...

“One should protect one's wealth for times of adversity; for the wealthy, what adversity can there be? Yet, fortune is fickle, and even accumulated wealth may one day perish.” — Chanakya Niti, Verse 7

A person should safeguard his wealth in order to protect himself from times of crisis. One should save and accumulate wealth because wealth, or Lakshmi, is considered fickle and unstable. No one can say when it may be lost. However, this raises a question regarding the first part of the verse: if a person accumulates wealth for times of adversity and saves money to protect himself from suffering, then where is the possibility of suffering in the first place? Chanakya himself provides the answer: Lakshmi is always unstable. Her nature is fickle, and therefore even accumulated wealth can be lost at some point. Another meaning that can be drawn from this is that a person should not rely solely on the accumulation of wealth to protect himself from adversity. Along with his own strength, intelligence, and effort, he should also place his faith in a power that is omnipotent. Such a power can only be understood as the Supreme Lord, because it is through His grace that a person receives the ability and strength to accumulate wealth, and it is also through His grace that accumulated wealth can be preserved. Because of His displeasure, or because of a person's own wrongful actions, it does not take long for the wealth one has earned to be destroyed. It is often observed in many families that the heads of the family who built their wealth through their hard work, intelligence, and capabilities see their children squander that wealth within a very short period of time. This clearly shows that Lakshmi is ever-moving and remains with a person only as long as his actions and conduct enable her to remain there. Many creatures in nature provide examples of this principle. In preparation for difficult times, they continue to accumulate things they can consume so that they may live comfortably during periods of crisis. These stored resources constitute their wealth. Before the arrival of the monsoon, ants collect and store food in their nests so that when the outside world becomes flooded and it becomes difficult to venture out, they can remain safely inside and consume their stored provisions. Yet they do not know when a wave of water might destroy their accumulated stores. This does not mean, however, that a person should stop accumulating wealth simply because Lakshmi is fickle and constantly changing. Rather, a person should make every effort to ensure that, through his actions and conduct, he becomes capable of keeping Lakshmi steadily by his side.
