Finding Balance in the Middle of Life

The middle of life can be one of the most stressful and confusing times we face. By now, many of us have moved out of our parents’ homes, begun our careers, and are caught in the whirlwind of responsibilities, deadlines, promotions, and competition—not only with colleagues but with entire companies. Alongside work, there’s the search for love, the quest for “Mr. Perfect” or “Mrs. Perfect,” and the desire to build a life that feels whole.

But here’s the truth: there is no such thing as Mr. or Mrs. Perfect. At best, we can hope to meet a “Mr. Okay” or “Mrs. Okay,” someone with whom we can share balance and growth. The search for perfection is exhausting; what we really need is balance.

The Three Styles of Drinking Water

I often use a simple example: imagine you want to drink water. There are three styles of doing it.

  1. Too tight. You grip the cup as if your life depends on it. Your muscles are tense, and even lifting the cup becomes difficult. You may spill the water, and drinking it isn’t easy.

  2. Too loose. You give up. The cup slips away. You procrastinate: “I’ll drink tomorrow.” The water remains untouched.

  3. Balanced. You relax your hand, hold the cup naturally, and drink with ease.

Most people say they want the third style. But in practice, many of us live in the first or second style—either too tight or too loose. Balance is the key.

Finding Purpose in Work

How do we find this balance? It begins with purpose. Every profession—whether you are a doctor, engineer, teacher, businessperson, or salesperson—has meaning. Unless the work directly harms others, there is always a positive contribution.

What matters most is intention. Ask yourself: Through my work, how am I benefiting others? Even if your company doesn’t align fully with your values, you can still bring positive impact through your actions.

Results may not always match our efforts. Some days we succeed; other days we fall short. Life, like the stock market, goes up and down. The highs bring joy, but the lows bring growth. Problems can become solutions, and obstacles can open new opportunities.

If you face a wall in life, don’t only think of smashing through it. Maybe you can climb over, go around, or even find a new path altogether. Don’t give up—just let go of rigid expectations.

Managing Stress in Daily Life

Balance also means managing our time and energy. Stress grows when every day looks the same: home to office, office to home, the same road, the same routine. Life is impermanent, and change is natural. Bring small shifts into your daily life—take a new path to work, spend a weekend in nature, exercise, or simply rest.

Sleep is essential. Without proper rest, we risk becoming machines, living only for deadlines, promotions, and money. And when we lose touch with sunlight, friends, and family, we lose life itself.

Even five minutes of meditation—watching your breath, noticing sensations in your body, connecting with gratitude and compassion—can change your entire day.

Midlife Crisis and Transformation

Many people face a “midlife crisis,” a sense that everything they have done is useless, leading to the temptation to throw it all away. But changing your environment won’t help if you don’t transform inside. Stress will follow you wherever you go.

The real solution is to connect with your inner well-being—awareness, love, compassion, and wisdom. You don’t need to abandon your responsibilities or retreat into a monastery. Instead, integrate your spiritual practice into daily life.

Personally, I juggle many roles and projects, yet I find joy because my work connects to my heart. My meditation practice—formal in the mornings and informal throughout the day—helps me bring awareness and compassion into every task. That way, even in stress and challenges, there is contentment beneath the surface.

Closing Thoughts

Life in the middle years is intense. Careers, relationships, responsibilities, and crises all converge. But balance is possible.

Remembering Tanuja Nautiyal (As in Aug 2025)

"Who was she?"
She was the Chemistry teacher during my first year at Northern India Engineering College (later renamed to Akhilesh Das Gupta Institute of Technology and Management).
Later she headed the Discipline Committee at the college.
Further later, she was made the Examination Cell Incharge.

"How did I caught her eye?"
I think I was highest ranking student in my class who joined NIEC. That's how I caught her eye at first for the good reason and that was the last good reason.

As I sit down here today, I am feeling everything I tell myself about Tanuja Nautiyal is because of stories I tell myself, impressions I formed, feelings I felt. Not because I have an incident to quote to you that proves anything here.

From third semester onwards, when I felt I was unnecessarily getting pulled into mess with young and female teachers, I always thought that I know I am not wrong and that Tanuja Nautiyal has my back.

When I felt I was being followed around in public transportation services (the bus service I used to take was Delhi Metro Bus service running between Mayur Vihar and Shastri Park), at the same time there were teachers who used to look at me with suspicious looking (thought provoking) eyes like Priti Verma Dhaka, Garima Sethi or the Swarnlata (who taught us "Software Engineering" briefly for about 2 weeks in fourth semester I think), I used to tell myself how does it matter, what can they do, am I not safe? I used to tell myself that let it be, if you would go and tell them to stop, they would not stop anyway. It was something outside of my control. All I had was trust in Tanuja Nautiyal (heading Discipline Committee) that she would make things right once what-this-was-an-investigation-surveillance-or-what ends after they know enough about.

The truth is that enough never came.

Lessons I learnt from my experiences with Tanuja Nautiyal are:

1. Never lay too much / unreasonable amount of trust in anyone

2. A little bit of Discipline in life does not have to hurt, it would rather help you. It helps you exert some control over situations (though outcomes are still out of control).

3. Ethics and Integrity are important.

Other Journaling Days

I am at Accenture these days. It has been 4 years since I left Chandigarh by the end of December of 2021. 

It was a rainy morning last week (and raining when I was having my aloo parantha and ginger tea at the Accenture cafeteria) when I first thought of pulling this piece up.

Accenture's cafeteria hall on ground floor block 9 gives me the memories of Infosys Chandigarh's cafeteria hall. Memories intensified by the aloo parantha and ginger tea available here similar to back those days at Infy Chandigarh. 

The large hall, few people here and there in spots but mostly empty seats. The tricolor (orange, white and green) theme of plastic chairs. The greenery outside the window. The rainy weather last week, and pre-rain weather today. All of these things bring up the past memories.

I think as I sit down here to write this piece of recollections of the breakfast table at my previous employer, I am getting recollections that I can put up in one short narrative. What I am sort of getting are flashes of memories spread across time and space. And with people in it like Anil Dahiya.

No need to mention that I don't have anyone here with me today, primarily the reason why I am able to do this writing. :D

The problem I am observing is that I don’t have any images or pictures of Infosys memories to share with you right now and as I am getting reflections of the memories from Infy these are more of a collage, a reel with music and sliding pictures rather than a narrative.

I think I forgot the name of aloo parantha outlet vendor but I think the tea vendor was “Karma Tea Stall” (but bhaiya used to work at Karma and his name was Gyanchand Jain whom Anil used to call Gyan ji) - haha, getting harder and harder to give you the specifics.

Similar to Infy Chandigar, here also you get aloo parantha from one vendor and tea from another.
Aloo paratha is served in a square three block plate with butter and curd. 
At Accenture, you can get an extra butter cube for free upon asking but at Infy they used to charge some 5 rupees extra for another butter cube or some extra curd.

Anil used to come to the office by 8-8.30 and he used to sit next to one of those meter wide square pillars (probably because the pillars had sockets in them).
Here at Accenture cafeteria, I observed there are meter wide square pillars 🙂

Just that I was sitting by the window with my food. Eating and reminiscing…

“What was I doing last night?”
Before going to bed, I was making news posts on Blogger using my AI tool. The topic of concern was the usual “Layoffs”, “Artificial Intelligence”, among others.
I had bad dreams about layoffs in the IT industry in general. About how Moni is treated by her employers in her baby-sitting job as if nannies or maids aren’t human beings.
First I woke up around 12.30 AM then Moni sent me to sleep forcibly, then the second time I woke up again around 3.10 AM. This second time I sat on my laptop to write some code for the AI tool to convert News webpages from various sources into summarized blog posts on my Blogger handle.

I think that was mostly it. I got up from my mat and bed-table around 6.30, and was on walk on society peripheral from 7 to 7.40 (I think, I did 5000 steps 🙂)
8-9.30: I was sleeping
Then I had bath and breakfast (some poor tasting Vermicelli, 😀)

Sometimes I think about Moni and think about myself. How large her life is despite having so little, and how little my life is despite having so much. To say that she has faced all possible pains Lord Krishna can give would be a bit of an exaggeration but she would not be too much short of that. She wakes up at 5 AM in the morning to do the household chores and cook food. By 7 she leaves to arrive at Princy’s house to do her cooking (breakfast and lunch) and then she would go to Alankrita's place to take care of Asher. At Alankrita’s place, she expected to take care of Asher, cook their meals and also keep the house clean. Sometimes the entire day goes by standing, without sitting and yet Alankrita’s husband would not be happy / satisfied with Moni. Lately she asked for half day off on Sunday and these people only let her go around 4.30-5 in the evening. Just about an hour before her time. 
Sometimes she would complain of pain in her thighs, sometimes in the back, sometimes her eyes would be troubling her due to dryness (though this one is because she rides scooty without a proper windshielded helmet).
The day before yesterday, we were at the mall (Zudio and Vishal Mega Mart in Sector 89) and Mahi wanted a pair of footwear that were priced about Rs 600-700. But Mahi chose to let them go, to not go for them after talking to Moni. Moni convinced her that these footwear were not in her budget. Yet the mother and daughter are happy. Moni’s life makes me feel so little.
I feel ashamed. I wasted the entire day today and also was snoozing here and there yesterday. Let me get back to work.
